6/1/2023 0 Comments A place called winterThis last happened in 1979, when Labour prime minister James Callaghan’s minority government was toppled by a 311-310 vote brought by Margaret Thatcher. MPs could also theoretically force a general election earlier than a prime minister wishes by passing a motion of no confidence in the government. The Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act 2022 restored the Government’s power to decide to call an early general election at any time upon request of the prime minister, without permission from Parliament. However, the law was repealed in 2022, after doing little to prevent Theresa May and Mr Johnson from calling snap elections with support from their MPs. The law stipulated that an election should be automatically scheduled for the first Thursday in May of the fifth year after the previous general election, unless Parliament votes to hold one sooner. The Tory-Lib Dem Coalition government attempted to neuter the prime minister’s ability to determine when a general election is held by passing the Fixed-term Parliaments Act, which was intended to set the dates for elections in advance. The Telegraph, meanwhile, reports that Mr Sunak could opt for an election in October or November 2024. Elections have traditionally been held on a Thursday in late spring, and a 2 May election would restore this. One of the dates considered likely for an election is Thursday, which would coincide with mayoral elections slated to be held in London, Greater Manchester and the West Midlands and save on costs relating to polling stations.
